BSNL Launches VoWiFi: Make Voice Calls Without Mobile Network Across India
BSNL has launched Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) calling, empowering users to make crystal-clear calls even in areas with no cellular coverage. The service is free, easy to use, and marks a major leap in BSNL’s push for digital inclusivity and next-gen connectivity.

India’s state-run telecom operator BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) is pushing the boundaries of digital connectivity with its newly launched Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) feature. Announced as part of its 25th-anniversary celebrations, BSNL now enables users to make voice calls even without a mobile network—by simply connecting to a Wi-Fi or broadband network at home, in the office, or even at public hotspots.
How Does BSNL’s VoWiFi Calling Work?
- No Signal? No Problem: When you’re in a low-signal or zero-coverage area, your phone can use a Wi-Fi or broadband connection to complete calls. The experience feels (and is billed) just like a regular call—no special app or new number required.
- Universal Compatibility: Most modern Android and iPhone models already have VoWiFi capabilities built-in. Users simply need to enable Wi-Fi Calling in their device settings. All you need is an active BSNL SIM and compatible handset.
- Completely Free: BSNL has confirmed there are no extra charges for calls made over Wi-Fi—calls are billed as per your existing mobile plan, without extra Wi-Fi calling fees.
Where and When Is It Available?
- The VoWiFi service is already live in BSNL’s South and West zones, with a nationwide rollout planned in the coming months.
- This launch brings BSNL on par with private telecom providers like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea, who have offered the feature for a few years.
- Coinciding with the VoWiFi rollout, BSNL is also rapidly expanding its 4G network and eSIM service nationwide, targeting stronger and more flexible connectivity for all regions.
Why Does This Matter?
- Uninterrupted Connectivity: VoWiFi is a powerful “backup” in basements, rural areas, or disaster zones, where traditional cellular coverage is unreliable or nonexistent—but Wi-Fi or broadband is present.
- No Need for a Second App: It’s integrated right into your phone and number. Incoming and outgoing calls work normally, keeping everything seamless for users of all ages.
- Level-Playing Field: With this launch, BSNL bridges the gap with private players, offering modern digital services to customers everywhere, especially the under-connected “Bharat” heartland.
How to Activate BSNL VoWiFi on Your Phone
- Insert your active BSNL SIM in a compatible smartphone.
- Connect to a Wi-Fi network (any broadband connection works).
- Open your device’s settings, search for “Wi-Fi Calling” or “Voice Over WiFi”, and toggle it ON.
- Reboot your phone if needed. You’re ready to make calls—even where there’s no mobile tower in sight!
BSNL’s Road Ahead
- BSNL plans to expand VoWiFi nationwide soon, ensuring millions of customers—especially in low-connectivity areas—can access reliable, free voice calling.
- With over 100,000 new towers installed for 4G, upcoming 5G plans, and now VoWiFi, BSNL is reinforcing its commitment to a digitally inclusive India.
