iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable Costs ₹2,99,900 in India

Apple just put a number on the phone it has spent a decade avoiding. The iPhone Duo, unveiled this week alongside the iPhone 18 Pro line, starts at $1,999 in the US and ₹2,99,900 in India — and it drops Face ID entirely.

What's actually in the box

The Duo opens like a book: a 5.4-inch cover screen on the outside, a 7.6-inch display on the inside once you unfold it. Apple says a 10-layer, non-reflective panel keeps the crease — the visible fold line that has bugged every book-style foldable since Samsung's original Galaxy Fold — barely noticeable and resistant to deepening over years of use. The inner screen is, by Apple's own numbers, 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max's, while the outer one still covers more than 90 percent of that phone's screen area.

The bigger surprise is what's missing. There's no Face ID sensor cut into either display. Instead, Apple built a Touch ID fingerprint reader into the side power button — a first for a mainline iPhone since the button-based sensor was retired years ago — and it works whether the phone is open or closed. You can also unlock it with a paired Apple Watch. It's a trade-off, not an oversight: fitting a folding hinge, two screens and a thin chassis into one device apparently left no room for the Face ID camera array Apple has used since the iPhone X.

The India price gap tells its own story

In the US, the Duo lands almost exactly between Samsung's two current foldables — $100 above the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and $100 below the Fold 8 Ultra. In India, the gap is much wider. The Fold 8 sells for ₹1,79,999, which puts Apple's ₹2,99,900 starting price — for the base 256GB model, rising to ₹4,49,900 for 2TB — well over a lakh higher than Samsung's equivalent. For a market where Samsung has spent years building the only real book-style foldable audience that exists, that's a steep ask, even for Apple's loyal upgrade base.

That price also lands the Duo above the psychological ₹1-lakh and ₹2-lakh thresholds that Indian buyers have historically used to sort phones into "aspirational" and "outright luxury." A ₹2.5 lakh price tag was already floating in pre-launch leaks, along with the correct call on Face ID being dropped — so Indian buyers who'd been tracking the rumor mill got the broad shape of this right weeks in advance, just not the final number, which came in even higher.

Samsung spent seven years teaching smartphones to fold. Apple needed one night to make the category feel new again.

Why this matters beyond the spec sheet

Foldables are still a rounding error in India's overall smartphone market, but they're the fastest-growing slice of the premium segment, and premium is where Apple actually makes its money here. A few things worth watching over the next few weeks:

  • Whether Apple's India assembly lines — which now build a large share of iPhones sold locally — get the Duo into production quickly enough to avoid the import-duty markup that hit early iPhone 17 Pro units.
  • Whether Samsung responds with festive-season discounting on the Fold 8 to defend its price advantage before Diwali.
  • Whether third-party repair and insurance costs for a folding screen — traditionally far higher than for flat glass — become a bigger factor in India, where out-of-warranty repairs are usually paid out of pocket rather than through carrier plans.

There's also a quieter software angle. The Duo ships with iOS 27 and Apple's revamped Siri, part of the Apple Intelligence push the company has been rolling out gradually. Indian users have so far gotten a thinner slice of Apple Intelligence features than English-first markets, largely over language support — so how well Siri's new capabilities actually work with Hindi and other Indian languages on a ₹3-lakh flagship will say a lot about whether this phone is built for India or just sold here.

What happens next

Preorders open October 16 at 5:30 PM IST, with the phone reaching stores on October 23 in more than 70 countries including India. That gives Samsung roughly six weeks to decide whether to cut prices, bundle trade-in offers, or simply let Apple's premium keep the Fold 8 as the default choice for anyone who wants a folding phone without spending like it's a used car. Either way, the book-style foldable — a category Apple avoided for eight straight years while Samsung and Chinese rivals worked out the kinks — is no longer a Samsung-only conversation in India.
